Today's game began with a moment of silence for Cavan player Richard Murray who passed away recently.  Richard was an integral part of a rapidly improving Cavan team and will be missed by all.  The Dublin Hurricanes would like to extend their condolences to Richard's friends, family and teammates.

A gutsy, complete game performance from 'Canes Ace William Pena (left) paved the way for the 'Canes to take their third victory of the season.  The 'Canes came out of the gate strong and, after stuttering in the middle innings, rallied late to put the game out of reach.  In a game where everybody contributed, Pena stood out due to his dominance on the mound and with the bat.  He carried a perfect game into the fourth inning and even chipped in with two hits and four RBI's to help his own cause.

The 'Canes now sit at the top of the Baseball Ireland standings in first place.

The Hurricanes unleashed an opening inning salvo of 9 runs on 9 hits during a rainy affair at Corkagh Park today.  The 2nd inning was more of the same as 2 more runs were knocked in before the game was halted due to rain.  Jesus Ramirez worked a walk with 1 out and Dan Barry drove him in when he stroked a single down the right field line.  Barry alertly scampered to second when the rightfielder misplayed the ball and then moved to third on a dropped 3rd strike.  He would eventually score on a passed ball.  When play is resumed, Tom Kelley will continue his at bat (3-0 count) while Mike Johnson waits on deck.

Resumed June 22nd, 2014

An uneventful finish to this one when play was finally resumed.  The Spartans managed to chase across three runs but couldn't stop the 'Canes from picking up another win.  William Pena notched his 5th win of the season.

Player / Manager Tom Kelley went 4-5 with 2 doubles, 1 walk, 1 RBI and 1 run scored to lead the Hurricanes to their 4th win of the season.  Kelley is now hitting .824 (14-17) on the season and is showing no signs of slowing down.

William Pena was in his usual fine form and picked up his 3rd win of the season.  Patrick Cooley was called on late and picked up his first save of the season as he snuffed out any chance of a Mariners comeback.
Titanic 'Canes Sink Northstars

May 24th, 2014

The 'Canes travelled to Belfast Saturday to take on the 2-4 Northstars.  Belfast were coming off of a 15-8 win against the Tigers, while the 'Canes look to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Game #1
Hurricanes 7 - 4 Northstars

Game #1 was a nine inning contest which saw The 'Canes win leader William Pena (3-0) square off against Belfast's resident southpaw John Carter in an eagerly awaited contest at Henry Jones Field.  Tom Kelley continued to swing a hot bat as he led off the first inning with a single, and would later score on an error.  In the top of the 2nd inning, Patrick Cooley was called out on a close play at home and was subseuently ejected when voicing his displeasure with the umpire's call.  A calming presence as always, Kelley came up again in the 3rd and hit his 1st home run of the season to spark a three run rally which saw Kelley, Johnson and Gil all come in to score.  Not to be outdone, Gabe Gil hit a homer of his own in the 5th which sparked another three run rally which also saw Babcan and Hernandez score runs.  On the mound, Pena was in fine form throughout and closed the door on Belfast to seal a 7-4 'Canes win.

W: William Pena (4-0)
L: John Carter

HR: Tom Kelley (1), Gabe Gil (1)

Game #2
Hurricanes 6 - 0 Northstars

Game #2 was a seven inning affair which saw former Oregon Duck Patrick Cooley take the mound against Ireland international Mark Smith.  Cooley and Smith battled back and forth, holding their opposition scoreless through three innings.  Cooley was dominant, striking out the side in the 1st, one in the 2nd and three in the 3rd.  Smith wasn't so lucky as the 'Canes finally got to him in the 4th when none other than Patrick Cooley hit a solo home run left field, breaking Smith's shutout.  Kelley hit a single in the 5th and was driven home when Gabe Gil crushed a Mark Smith offering deep in to the trees behind the left field fence.  Smith regained his composure in the 6th, retiring the 'Canes in order.  The calm didn't last long as the 'Canes picked up three more runs in the 7th to put themselves up 6-0.  Cooley struck out two in the 5th, three in the 6th and another two in the 7th to nail down the win.  Cooley was untouchable all day, recording 14 strikeouts in total.

June 7th, 2014

The game started well enough for the 'Canes as ace hurler William Pena made short work of the Mariners in the bottom of the 1st inning.  But the serenity at Black Sox Park was short lived as the 'Canes made numerous errors in the bottom of the 2nd and were down 6-0 before they had time to think.  Never ones to let their heads drop, the 'Canes quickly regrouped and clawed back three runs in the top of the 3rd.  They added two more in the 6th and one in the 7th to draw level with a depleted Mariners team.  Gareth Donnelly battled valiantly but the 'Canes smelled blood and moved in for the kill.  Four more runs came across in the top of the 9th to put the 'Canes ahead 10-6 and put the game out of reach.  Gabriel Gil was called on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his 1st win of the season.

The 'Canes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st this past Sunday and never looked back.  A dazzling performance from William Pena was backed by strong hitting from one through nine in the order.  Daniel Babcan went 2-4 while Gabe Gil stroked a pair of doubles.  Both would finish the day with three runs scored.  Recently returned Roberto "El Gato Grande" Marquez was 2-3 and crushed a 6th inning offering over the centrefielder's head for a stand up double.  By the end of the 6th the 'Canes were close to invoking the mercy rule when John Hensey reached base on a ball hit up the middle.  He would eventually scamper to third on a wild pitch and came around to score the 16th and winning run on a Mike Johnson ground ball.
El Classico; 'Canes Take Season Series
Hurricanes 8 - 2 Spartans

July 6th, 2014

W: William Pena (7-0)
L: Scott Karnes

In game 2 of fiercest rivalry in Irish Baseball, the Spartans looked for revenge against a 'Canes team who had taken game 1 of the series 11-3.  'Canes ace William Pena looked to add to his perfect 6-0 record, while Scott Karnes toed the rubber for the visitors.  The 'Canes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a double off the bat of veteran slugger Steve DiVito, a single from Roberto Marquez and a triple from Jesus Ramierez.  Never content to sit on a lead, the 'Canes added another run in the 4th and three more in the 5th.  Gabriel Gil (left) led off the inning with a triple, Patrick Cooley stroked a double and Jose Hernandez hit a single to put the 'Canes up 7-1.  Both teams would add another run as the 'Canes took this one 8-2.

Pena was his usual dominant self, holding the Spartans to just two runs while picking up his 7th win of the season.  Gabriel Gil stood out for the Hurricanes, finishing a home run shy of the cycle.

It was an overcast day at Corkagh Park as The Belfast Northstars travelled to Dublin to take on The Dublin Hurricanes.  As usual William Pena was handed the ball for the 'Canes, while southpaw Melvyn Woods started for Belfast.  Pena dominated from the get-go, striking out two in the 1st, three in the 2nd and three in the 3rd. Pena (left with battery mate Roberto Marquez) showed no signs of slowing down and continued to dominate, fanning the side in the 5th inning and again in the 8th. He would finish with 18 K's through 8.0 innings while giving up 2 hits, 1 run and 0 walks.  He threw 106 pitches, 78 for strikes and 28 for balls. Pena now holds the Dublin Hurricanes Club record for most K's in a game for the A Team as well as the B Team (17 K's, 2013 season).

The 'Canes got off to a slow start by their standards, taking just a one run lead in to the 3rd inning.  But a four run rally in the 3rd would pave the way for their 15th win of the season.  Mike Johnson led off the inning with a swinging-bunt single, followed up by a Gabe Gil single, a Patrick Cooley RBI double and a Jose Hernandez two RBI single.

William Pena pitched four strong innings before giving way to Patrick Cooley.  Cooley (file photo left) was just as dominant, retiring the opposition in quick succession.  The 'Canes hitters continued to pile on runs, eventually stretching the lead to eight.

Gabe Gil was brought on for an inning of work as he took the ball for the ninth.  The Spartans flirted with a rally and managed to post five runs before Gil put out the fire by striking out the final batter.
