Despite shipping a two-run lead in the top of the first, the Canes backed starting pitcher Mac Eklof and quickly put their bats to work. Stephen O'Connor (left) finished a HR short of the cycle, a homer he was denied when cut down at the plate on an inside-the-park attempt. Raffy Diaz reached base in all his AB's for the second game in a row, while Colm Tully hit a walk-off single to draw down the mercy rule.

May 17th, 2014

Heading to Cavan with a depleted squad for a doubleheader against the Comets, the undefeated B team dominated in the opener but were taken the distance and beaten for the first time in the nightcap.

Game #1
Hurricanes 20 - 5 Comets

In the first game of the day, starting pitcher Woong Kyu Lee (left) was dominant with both the ball and bat, aiding his own cause with a sacrifice fly and a double. Woong was aided by solid hitting from every spot on the order, as the Canes raced to a lead and closed out a 20-5 victory in just five innings, Forrest Pierce drawing the loss for Cavan.

Game #2
Hurricanes 8 - 9 Comets

Game two saw San Francisco's favourite son Pete Ruotolo (left) take on fellow American and Ohio native Cullan Garrity.  Garrity held the Canes close throughout the first four innings but was unable to find an answer to 'Canes rookie sensation Stephen O'Connor. O'Connor was his usual dominant self with the bat and finished with two doubles, a triple and a solo home run.  The Comets rallied to take the lead in the sixth inning and Ireland international Paul Coombes made a stellar defensive play to rob Andrea Fiorenza of a triple in the seventh, snuffing out a potential rally.  Jason Beck, who had come on to relieve Garrity when the score was 3-1, then nailed down a 9-8 Cavan win.

Buoyed by a walk-off win against the Black Sox, the Ashbourne Giants hung tough with the Hurricanes for most of a well-played game of baseball in the Corkagh Park sunshine.

Cormac Eklof (left) was imperious on the mound, scattering four hits over six innings and, swinging the bat for the time since 2007, helped his own cause by going 1 for 2 with a hit-by-pitch. Woong Kyu Lee and Andrea Fiorenza were among the big hitters, while Hensey, Tully, Gantzoras and Fabian all helped carry the Canes to an 8-3 win.

In Baseball Ireland's first ever midweek game, the 'Canes delivered a comprehensive performance to take the season series against the Greystones Mariners. Inside-the-park homeruns from Danny Babcan (left) and Steve O'Connor were the highlights, while wily veteran Cormac Eklof held the Mariners to just two runs.
Killer 'Canes Repel Northern Invaders

June 28th, 2014

Game #1
Hurricanes 10 - 6 Northstars

The Northstars rocked up to Corkagh Park with a well deserved swagger, boasting the only undefeated record in the Baseball Ireland B League. All-time Irish League wins leader Mac Eklof (left) took the hill for the Canes, and scattered six hits and just two earned runs over seven innings of baseball. Offensively the Canes were led as always by Stephen O’Connor (2 for 3, 2B, 2 runs) and by the welcome return of Ronald Potharst, ineligible for recent fixtures against Ashbourne, Cavan and West Clare (2 for 2, 2 RBI). The Killer B's racked up scores in four of their six innings at the plate, resisting a late Belfast rally to take the game by a score of 10-6.

Game #2
Hurricanes 23 - 1 Northstars

Buoyed by a first game victory, the Canes exploded into life early in game two, offering veteran Pete “Pamf” Ruotolo (left) all the run support he could dream of with a seventeen-run second inning. Jesus Ramirez was imperious at the plate, going 4-4 with four runs batted in, including a bases clearing double that got the Canes’ monster inning rolling. Debutantes Daniel Gutierrez and Nelson Sanguino joined the hit parade, backing up solid batting performances right down the Hurricanes’ order. The lead secured, superstar DJ and international man of mystery Ruotolo handed the ball off to Garret Pearse, and then Woong Kyu Lee, who saw the Canes home with a season-best winning margin of 23-1.

Spartans 8 - 11 Hurricanes

July 6th, 2014

W: Cormac Eklof (6-0)
L: Norbert Cuprick
S: Pete Ruotolo (1)

The Hurricanes, buoyed by their record-setting win against the Northstars, raced to an early lead against the Spartans when Woong Kyu Lee brought home John Hensey in just the second at bat of the game. Colm Tully (left) led a middle-of-the-order charge which saw the 'Canes up 8-0 after three innings. The Spartans, bolstered by the introduction of Baseball Ireland's grand old man Will Beglane on defense, shut the red-hot 'Canes down for long periods and started to see some limited success against starter Mac Eklof. The Big Red Machine was held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but some clever base-running in the sixth by Lee forced a throwing error which allowed Danny Babcan to scamper home. An Edgar Lewis double helped bring in two more runs, putting the Canes 11-3.  Eklof would leave the game as Lee was given the ball and called upon to close out the game. But Lee struggled to find the zone as well as he had in his previous outing and the Spartans quickly re-established a foothold in the game. With the tying run waiting on deck, 'Canes Management called upon wily veteran Pete 'Pamf' Ruotolo to put an end to the rally.  Ruotolo duly delivered with a strikeout before inducing a game ending ground out to Raffy Diaz at third.
'Canes Net Two Wins Against Dolphins

July 27th, 2014

Game #1
Hurricanes 16 - 1 Dolphins

The 'Canes hosted the West Clare Dolphins on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Corkagh Park, the undefeated Mac Eklof toeing the rubber for the home side. The Dolphins kept themselves in the game for the first two innings, with the scores tied at 1-1 going into the third. But The Canes' bats came to life that inning, with Rafa Diaz stroking an RBI double to put The 'Canes ahead. Some clever and aggressive baserunning, including steals of home by Dimitrios Gantzoras (left) and Chuck Fabian, added to The 'Canes lead and Eklof saw them home to a comfortable win.

W: Cormac Eklof (7-0)

Game #2
Hurricanes 24 - 4 Dolphins

Rookie hurler Woong Kyu Lee was handed the ball for the nightcap and the young Korean performed well in his 2nd start of the season. Lee got all the run support he could ask for from his teammates.  The 'Canes hit game one starter Joe O'Dea, sent back out by the Dolphins for the second game, for 11 runs in the first two innings. Three West Clare relievers couldn't stop the bleeding as the 'Canes were up by 20 runs at the end of the 4th inning. Edgar Lewis (left in red, with A Team slugger Gabe Gil) tossed a scoreless inning of relief to seal a 24-4 win.

Hurricanes 11-0 Black Sox

The Canes B team, playing in a gorgeous Black Sox Park on a sunny afternoon, shut down the Black Sox and ran out 11-0 winners off the back of a complete game performance by Cormac Eklof. The Canes’ middle order did the damage, with Steve O’Connor, Edgar Lewis, Garret Pearse (pictured) and Nelson Sanguino contributing 10 RBI out of spots 4-7 in the lineup.

Defensively, the Red Machine was solid, with third baseman Rafael Diaz and substitute Woong Kyu Lee making key plays to hold the Sox scoreless.

Spartan Invasion Repelled

August 23rd, 2014

Hurricanes 6-4 Spartans

Taking the hill in a clash of rivals, Cormac Eklof was aiming for an undefeated regular season, but the Canes had to contend with a string of injuries and absentees. Injured players Peter Kavanagh (pictured) and Dimitrios Gantzoras took the field to make up the numbers and ended up making crucial plays throughout a tight contest. Center fielder José Hernandez and substitute Stephen O’Connor did the serious damage with the bats as the Canes came back from 4-2 down to win 6-4. Mac Eklof led his own defensive effort, striking out the side twice, while Ronald Potharst ensured some solidity in the infield. The Canes finished the season 15-1, and will enter the playoffs with the best record in the B League.
